How did your Vibrant Soul
lose their life?
It was determined that he had arteriosclerosis -
(hardening of the arteries) which resulted in a very
sudden heart attack.
Now tell us about the simple
things that brought your Vibrant Soul joy:
He loved to travel. He loved to take long drives
in his car. He would plan and look forward to road
trips with my mom, Florence. He traveled by plane,
train or car, but favored the car to take to the
National Baptist Convention every year also with my
mom. They were truly life mates. He also loved to go
deep sea fishing.
Was there a particular book
that they enjoyed or made a difference in their life?
He loved reading and studying the bible, or any
books that enhanced his study of the Bible. It was his
passion!
Was there a certain song
or singer that especially moved them?
"Amazing Grace" and he sang this song (along with
his congregation) every Sunday morning for over 40
years before he got up to preach. One of the very
last songs he sang on the day he preached his very
last sermon (he died on a Monday) was the song, No Not
One. I guess that would have had to be up there with
one of his favorite songs.
Was there a specific musical
instrument or type of music that they responded to more so than
others?
He liked the piano and organ. He pretty much took
to the scripture, which said, "Make a joyful noise
unto the lord", so he let the drums, bass, guitar be
played joyously in the church. He loved to hear
people sing. He particularly love to hear his 3 sons
sing and he had a great and powerful singing voice
too. He loved to sing!
Did they have a favorite
play, movie/film?
No particular favorites movies but anything about
the life of the Bible or about Jesus. He liked
watching the "Ten Commandment" with Charlton Heston.
He also liked nature films. He was intrigued and
fascinated by animal nature as it related to human
life.
Was there a particular poem
or poet they enjoyed reading or listening to as it was read?
He enjoyed reading the Book of Psalms.
What was their favorite
place they would go to or visit?
His boyhood home of Williston, South Carolina
Did they have a favorite
food, snack or meal that they preferred?
He loved eating the fish he would catch when he
went deep sea fishing...Blue fish, pogies, salmon. His
favorite snack was nuts. He loved eating peanuts,
pecans, walnuts, and cashews.
What sport or game (including
board games or playing cards) did they particularly like to play?
He enjoyed watching others play
football and he would always be on
the side of the underdog.
Did they have a hobby, pasttime
or collection?
He would collect positive quotes (to later be used
in his sermons). He collected old coins. He also
collected good sermons at all the Baptist conventions.
What flower or plant did
they enjoy receiving or having in their home or office?
Any flower was beautiful because he believed it
was made by God. He was simply touch by the thought
behind the giving.
What artist, painting or
sculptor did they take a special interest in?
My brother Fredrick. He was very proud of what he
could do artistically.
Is there another simple
joy that they had that you would like to share with us?
He loved shopping for new suits. He always
dressed as sharp as a tack as did my mom. They were
the sharpest dressed couple around. Also, watching a
movie on TV that would make him laugh. He love to
read, teach and study the Bible. He loved going to
church and mean he "L-O-V-E-D!", going. He took joy
in watching his children grow up. He also loved
giving and encouraging kids to aspire to be every
thing they could be and to explore all of their
talents.
Now please share with us
your Vibrant Soul's goals, dreams and aspirations. For instance,
did they want to learn to play an instrument, write poetry or a
book? Did they have a secret dream to climb a mountain, to teach
children their passion, to water ski or learn to paint? Did they
want to start their own business, further their education, or introduce
two friends they felt belonged together?
He wanted with a passion to buy some additional
land next to the land his father left him in South
Carolina and build a house for he and my mother
(Florence) and to grow old and live in the rest of
their days.
What particular goal was
your Vibrant Soul working on or intending to accomplish?
He was guiding the church to finish paying for a
new educational building (next to the main church
building) that he created. With the help of the
church members, he wanted to see that the church's
building fund would be able to complete that which was
started and not to leave the church in debt.
What did your Vibrant Soul
especially dream about being, doing or seeing happen?
He wanted to see his 3 boys (adults now) "make it"
to be self-sufficient and taking good care of
themselves and for one of them to become a preacher
like himself. He wanted to see Derrick, the middle
son become well again through the miracle of prayer.
What did your Vibrant Soul
aspire to be, do or have in their life?
He loved God. He aspired to finish what he
started and oddly enough he did that especially in his
passing. The church was the number 1 passion in his life.
He aspired to be a good shepherd, a good pastor and to
be faithful to all of his talents. He following his
spirit all through his life and it guided him every
step of the way. He aspired to be inspiring and to be
a great teacher and leader... to leave a legacy. He
aspired to be a good husband and father, and he was.
Much before his passing, unbeknownst to most of the
church congregation, he had taken out a life insurance
policy on himself. If he were to died before the
educational building was finished, the insurance would
pay off the remaining balance on the building. This
was his final dream and it was fulfilled by the grace
of God. This was a vibrant soul in action.
Take it on!
I'm going to fullfill the
dream.
